Thanks to all on the list who sent suggestions. I got it going mostly at
your promptings! Basically what I found is that the PS is somewhat marginal
(I think). Larry Pina suggests bench testing the PS and gives details on
how. I found that the +12v was more nearly +10.75v while +5v was OK.
Snooping around inside the PS I found a small pot labelled "REGADJ".
Tweaking the pot altered the voltages. If I adjusted for a full 12v however,
the +5v went to nearly 6v and the machine would not now stay on while I held
in the pwr/cmd/cont keys. So I backed off to about 11.5v (and 5.5v). Now the
machine will start up and STAY ON after about three tries. Booting proceeds
normally after that. A new B2 battery made no difference in any of this
behavior. I have a hunch the PS should be replaced as the fixed delta
between +5v and +12v seems to have drifted downward on this unit. Anyhow I'm
able to get it going and that's what counts for now. Thanks so much
