100% certain the jumpers are set correctly? Does the
drive have removable termination resistors? If so,
try removing and reinstalling them to wipe off any
layer of oxidation on the pins. Do the same with all
the jumpers on the drive. Does the owner of the Mac
smoke? Cigarrete smoke is nasty bad for computers. :P

How big is the drive? If it's HFS standard format and
650 meg or smaller, try connecting it to a SCSI card
in a PC, then install Nero Burning ROM and see if
it can burn the volume to a CD-R. If it can, then
see if a Mac can read the CD-R.

If you save the data that way, then while you're at
it, use the PC's SCSI card to low level format it
before putting it back in the Mac.
