>I've got a nice Mac IIci. >I've also got 128MB of RAM and [snip]. >I've loaded this with OS 6.0.8. It all seems to work fine, and FAST! >Except that with 128MB of RAM it takes a long time to start-up (memory >>test?).
Yes it's a long memory test with 128MB of RAM. The only way that I know of to avoid memory test is to put in a DayStar Turbo 040 accel, whose control panel allows disabling the memory test (it actually substitutes a much shorter one). With system 6 you can get up to 14MB of application RAM with Maxima. Optima32 will allow 32MB but since it's incompatible with MultFinder you would be able to run only one application at a time and all software would have to be 32 bit clean. Maxima doesn't have that problem. >I also have a Classic II that has 10MB of RAM (2MB on the motherboard, >and two 4MB simms). When I set this up with OS 6.0.8L I get to play >with all 10MB, unless I'm mistaken 10MB with 6.0.8L really surpises me. Learn something everyday. >If there is no other way around it I may go back to 8MB of >RAM so the machine boots faster. Something like 20MB might be better, because then Maxima could give you 14 MB of application RAM and Maxima can use the remaining 6 MB as a RAM disk.
