The opening of the disk is 'read' by this lamp and light-sensitive cell (?)

ahh, this makes some sense of a problem i'm having on both my Duo230c and my LC III.

i put in discs which have worked fine on PCs, and the Macs will format them for mac but then verify, re-verify and finally spit the disc out with 'initialisation failed'.

i cant seem to work out why it will accept some discs and not others.

its not saying write-protected, though.
