I use pure acetone for this purpose, and it works fine. It is usually 
sufficient to dissolve the hard glossy coating that has formed on the
rolls and get to the fresh sticky rubber below. I recently fixed a LW
II NTR exhibiting exactly the same symptoms than you describe. Probably
won't work for totally dried-up, cracked rollers - in that case some
commercial miracle juice may, or may not, work better.

And a piece of rough cloth (e.g. denim) works much better than a paper
towel for scrubbing.
