What's the secret to getting 80 pin SCA SCSI HDs to run full speed ahead? I

Define 'DOGS'. I have 3 9GB 68-pin 10krpm drives on my 9600 and non seem to manage much more than 12MB/s single or 22MB/s using OS X RAID. It's still a lot faster than the on-board bus though.
Is it the adapters (either 68 pin wide or 50 pin) that is the bottleneck?
The adapters are not a bottle neck, unless you drop to 50-pin as they halve the speed. If you are using a 68-pin SCA - 68-pin adapter then it is critical you use a cable with a terminator on the end, and also ensure your SCSI adpater and SCSI drive both support 'LVD' mode. If any of this is not the case you may find the whole SCSI rig drops to 'SE' (Single Ended) mode which is significantly slower than LVD. Also ensure you don't have the 'force SE mode' link jumpered on the hard disk *or* the adapter (my SCA adapter has links on the back that duplicate what is on the drive, presumably because proper SCA rigs can be configured externally).
Apart from this, ensure you have any required drivers correctly installed and set up in Mac OS.
Any insight appreciated...
