Sorry for the delay in replying to this thread, but I got busy at work......

I upgraded it to the full 10Mb (2 x 4M simm) and later installed a 2Gb HP hard drive that I scrounged from an older workstation. This was formated with Lido 7, a free disk utility that can make third party HDs work in Macs. I have since found that you can ResEdit Apples disk tools to make that handle third party HDs also. However, Lido does have some nice features that test the speed of the drive, and also test it's integrity. Total HD size is not important, you just need to partition it right (depends on the OS - for OS 6 the limit is 2Gb).

If I download Gamba's patched SCSI HD Tool, will that let me use the Micropolis 2GB hd in my Classic II? He sent me this about a year ago when I was trying to determine the vitality of a Seagate HD I had bought, but it is on my old work computer where I don't work anymore.

My guess would be yes but I'm not familiar with Micropolis. There is not much room inside a Classic II, and I have found that some HD's distort the screen, as they are mounted very close. But it does no harm to try (unless you fry yourself on the high CRT voltages!!!!).

I added the FPU card (which was supplied by a swap-lister), but the only real advantage I noticed was I could run "Battlezone". Still it's nice to have.

So, if I was thinking to do database and MYOB kind of stuff on it, then would a FPU really help much in general speed?

MYOB? Is that number crunching? Then maybe.

I tried running OS 7.6.1 for a while but this is not really a web browsing mac :-) I then discovered that the Classic II runs OS 6.0.8L (the L is important). With this version of OS 6 the finder recognises all 10Mb of ram, not just the normal 8Mb.

I have a 2 floppy 6.0.8 installer. How can I tell whether or not that is 6.0.8L without actually installing it? I think I downloaded this from Apple's website.

You don't need to install it. Stick the "startup" floppy in the drive when the machines turned off, then turn it on! It should boot into OS6 from the floppy itself :-) BUT go here and get the real OS 6.0.8L...

Once you've tried it on floppy, and you like it, you can instal it on your HD. Be sure to add the extras from Gamba's site - like Superclock ect...

Extract from the readme:

"SYSTEM SOFTWARE VERSION 6.0.8L IS NOT FOR ALL MACINTOSH COMPUTERS
Unlike previous versions of system software, version 6.0.8L does NOT work on all Macintosh computers. It runs on the Macintosh Classic, Macintosh Classic II, Macintosh PowerBook 100, Macintosh LC and Macintosh LC II. System software version 6.0.8L does not work on any other Macintosh computers."

I found a s/w suite called VersaTerm, which I think is wonderful for old Macs.

Cool. I looked around but couldn't find it. Is it freeware? If so, where did you get it, or could you email it to me?

No its not free. In fact its still for sale new (and they still support OS 6)!! Go here:

but its a lot of money for an old computer. I got my (older) version for $2 at my favourite surplus computer store. I do like it though.....
