More likely that it is one of the following:

1. CD is a burned disc and the 8500 CD drive cannot read it (or read it reliably).
2. System is too new for the 8500 to understand (the 8500 will not boot anything newer than 9.1 without a hack).

You could try one more thing if you are certain that the above two items are NOT true-hold down Shift-Option-Command-Delete on startup. This will force the Mac to exclude the hard drive during the boot process. If you get a flashing folder/question mark, then you'll know the CD just won't boot the 8500, as I expect. You only need to let the keys up and it will usually recover and boot from the HD normally. If not, reset using the keyboard or front panel button.

My 8500 won't boot from a CD. I have the CD selected as the startup drive
and I also have held down the "C" key while booting but the machine always
starts up from the internal HD.

I can get the same CD to boot from my B&W G3 but not with my wife's 8500.
Both machines are running System 8.6.

Perhaps the CD has a G3 unique System?
