Hardly! You can just replace the caddy. (The smart user would have
several on hand anyway, though I've never had one get damaged.) You can
grab a bunch cheap these days.

Even faster caddy-based drives (I have a 32x Plextor) are much quieter
than equivalent-speed tray drives, especially with unbalanced discs.
There's also no chance of placing the disc slightly askew and getting it
crunched in the door. Less handling of the discs, too. Lots of good
reasons. :-)
