I used NetBSD or some other unix in a PC and/or pmac, using dd. SCSI discs are fairly linear. If the HDs sizes match (original HD < all other HDs) it will probably work. I had a IIci with a defective floppy drive, and I did everything by swapping HDs, I took a small hd (270 MB or so), and stuffed all the rescue things on it (macos, macos installation files, mt everything , hd setup, accelerator drivers, NetBSD install files) that I typically (could) use.
