Try disabling built in termination on the external
CD-ROM and using a plug in terminator on its other
connector. Sometimes it'll make a difference which
connector you plug the cable going to the computer.

As always, make sure that only the drives at the ends
of the SCSI chain are terminated and that every drive
has a unique ID number.
