You sure you've got the full complement of standard Apple networking extensions and control panels? My System 6 LC has a CDEV called "Network" (for AppleTalk) and I had to separately install MacTCP and configure it to use the Ethernet, which in turn required that I find and install the INITs for Ethernet capabilities. System 7 prior to Open Transport seems much the same.

don't know the mac address of the ethernet card.

any ideas?
