Stuffit archives, .SIT type, can be extracted without
a resource fork. I think it was version 5 when they
added the feature of adding a resource fork onto any
.SIT that's missing it when it's opened.

Self extracting Stuffit archives, .SEA type, cannot
be opened when their resource fork is lost, because
the
extractor mini-program is in the resource fork and
the data fork is apparently not the same as a normal
.SIT file. There must also be some data in the
resource fork specific to each archive. If there
wasn't, there'd be no reason for Stuffit Expander to
not be able to open .SEA files missing their resource
forks.

That's why it irritates me when I see an FTP server
filled with .SEA files that aren't BinHex or
MacBinary encoded. They're impossible to download
intact with anything but a Mac, and even then it
doesn't always work because depending on the routing
over the internet (or an ISP with a server not
properly
configured) can strip off the resource fork.

Makes me want to take a #10 "Clue-by-Four" to any
sysadmin who puts up ANY Macintosh specific file
for download without BinHexing or Macbinarying it. ;)

Anyway, if the Mac filename has no extention or
has any extention other than .BIN .HQX or .SIT, you'll
have to try downloading it with a Macintosh and
hope it comes through OK.
