I backed up my old 400k/800k floppies using my SE (FD version).  I
dragged data to the hard drive or made disk images of the floppies. 
Then moved the images/data to 1.4 floppies.  Then used an external USB
floppy on an iMac to get the images/data on CD.  It was tedius but
worked okay.  Would have been easier to use a SCSI burner, but I don't
own one (not one my SE can keep up with anyway).
