There was a book manuscript on the hard drive that I wanted (I had a copy on a 3.5 floppy but couldn't access it either). So I took a two-pronged approach, hoping at least one would retrieve the manuscript. I took the hard drive to a Mac shop and had them put the contents on a CD. At the same time, I located a "new" motherboard and power unit.
One day and $45 later I had the CD, which worked fine on my iMac 333 and I was able to access the manuscript. Mission accomplished. But I had already invested $20 on the motherboard and power unit on eBay, so I decided to go ahead and see if I could get the IIcx running again, just for fun. If it didn't work, I was going to throw it out.
A few days later I popped in the new components and within a few minutes it chimed back to life. I was amazed, since this was my first time inside any computer. I ran through a box of old floppy disks just to see what was on them. The drive worked without a hitch.
So now I'm wondering, what do I do with this little machine now that it's running again? It got about 10 years of solid use as a word processor back in the day, but the iMac handles all of that now, plus all the other normal computer stuff like e-mail and Internet. The 16Mhz processor and 40meg hard drive don't seem big enough to do much other than be a glorified typewriter.
I still have the 128k external modem for it. The software is still on the hard drive. But I can't imagine what I could do with it online. The printer still works as far as I know.
Just to complete the picture, I have two iMacs (333 & 233). One runs Panther 10.3.8 and the other runs OS 9.2.2.
I just don't know what to do with this little IIcx now that it's running again. I hate to trash it. Are there any practical uses for it, or is it too obsolete to bother? I figure if anybody knows, it will be someone here.
