''Another cheap PC marketing tactic I hope Apple doesn't
fall into with the new generation is a low priced
model with a hot CPU that's woefully inadequate in
one or two critical areas. The big PC OEMs love to
sell cheap boxen running XP Home with only 256megs,
or worse, 128megs, onboard video using a chunk of
that small amount of RAM, and/or a hard drive with
an impressive number of Gigabytes but spinning at
only 5,400 RPM. But hey! It has a 2.9Ghz Celeron!
(And no AGP or PCI-X slot to upgrade the crappy
onboard video, and only 2 or 3 PCI slots, one of
which has a 56K software driven modem in.)''

You're right. I own two PCs: one is a PIII at 500 Mhz, and the other is
another PIII at 1 Ghz. The performance -should- be greater in the latter
one, but that's not what happens.

My Epox board (on the PIII 500) has an 2x AGP slot, 5 PCI slots and 2 ISA
(those ISA can go down the toilet, I don't need them for nothing), and some
expandability. The other simply doesn't. It has a crappy onboard video card
(can we call it video card?), onboard sound and LAN. It even has that AMR
slot!

I wanted to upgrade him, so I bought a PCI Geforce FX5200. Bad choice: the
graphics improved, but the bus speed simply makes me nervous. And I got a
new HD (it had a 5400 RPM 40 Gb Seagate), a 7200 RPM, 120 Gb Samsung
SpinPoint. But the performance didn't show up like I wanted. It really does
hibernate faster than the other (and has 512 Mb of RAM), but when I'm
starting the computer, playing games like Sims 2, it can turn me into a
person with a will to destroy the stupid machine!

Sooo, I would really love a Mac with a board like my Epox (but NOT with the
Slot 1 processor, of course! ;-)

Greets.
