Enablers aren't patches, they don't directly modify
other files. Driver would be a better term. Or a
module that loads in the same "ring" as the System
file.

Generally, enablers were used to run System or Mac OS
versions released before the Macintosh the specific
enabler is used on. Most System or Mac OS versions
would run on all the previous hardware, with the
exceptions of Macs that are really old compared to
the OS release date.

7.x.x doesn't run on anything older than the Plus.
7.6.x doesn't run on anything older than the IIci IIsi
and IIfx.
8.0/8.1 requires at least a 68LC040.
8.5 through 9.1 require at least a 601 PPC.
9.2.x requires at least a G3.

There are hacks to get some versions to run on older
Macs than what's on the official spec sheets, but
getting 7.x.x onto a 128/512K just ain't gonna happen,
nor is getting 7.6.x onto anything without a 32bit
"clean" ROM.

One thing I did find intriguing on the IIci with
Daystar 66Mhz Turbo 601 running 7.6.1 is that under
certain circumstances when it'd crash and reboot
into 030 mode, the Memory Control Panel would
show a 24/32bit mode switch and About This Computer
would show only 4megs of RAM available to the
system. I thought it'd be a neat experiment to
shut down without flipping it to 32bit and trying
to boot the drive on an older Mac like a IIcx, but
since I didn't have such, I never tried.

Flip the switch over to 32bit, use the Daystar
Turbo 601 control to activate the PPC, reboot and
back in action as a "Powermac 475". Yup, the thing
pretended to be an LC 475 with a 601 upgrade. ;)

It will be total Fandemonium!
