It sounds to me like the disk has been formatted with a driver that
will only work on an 040 and above.
You may want to have a look in SCSI Probe or a similar utility while
the disk is attached to an 040 box, and confirm what disk driver is
being loaded. Once you know this, you could poke around and check
whether this version will run on an 030 box.
If using Apple Drive Setup or HD Setup - consult documents along this line.

I have a hard disk (500Mb Quantum) that has OS 7.5 installed perfectly on it.
However, none of my 68030 Macs (SE/30, IIci, LC3) can even detect its
existence. My 68040 and PPC Macs (LC475 and up) can detect it, and as far
as they're concerned, there is nothing wrong with it.
What gives? How do I get this damned hard disk to work in my SE/30?
