I recently picked up a Mac IIfx from the swap list.
The video card in it, however, is simply pathetic. Apparently it is
called a "Mac II High-Resolution Video Card". It's capable of
displaying the super high resolution of 640x480 with a completely
astonishing 16 FULL COLORS! Hooked up to the 20" ViewSonic CRT monitor
I have for it, the Finder never looked so ridiculous. When I insert a
floppy disk, the icon that pops up on the screen is almost the same
size as the actual floppy itself. Well, not really, but you get the
idea. I can read the text underneath the icons in the Finder from 50
feet away. At this resolution on this monitor, the lack of color is
glaringly apparent. Setting it to black & white looks better.
While I'm fully aware of my options as far as video cards go for this
machine, I'm looking for an intermediate fix to hold me over until I
get a decent card.
See, apparently you can get this particular card to display a
record-setting 256 colors by adding VRAM to it in the form of "DIP
chips". I pulled the card out, and it is obvious where these chips are
supposed to go. From the sockets I can get a good idea about the size
I need. My question is this: where can I find the appropriate chips to
stick on here? Better yet, exactly WHAT CHIPS do I need to find? Simply
knowing what size is not sufficient. And finally, is there any other
Apple hardware that uses these chips that I could rape and pillage for
my purpose? I need eight of them.
I have a room that is full of classic Apple, Macintosh and compact Macs
so if Apple used them elsewhere it is probable that I've got 'em. But
it would take me years to pull apart every system and board looking for
these things, especially since all I know about them is what size they
are.
Or is this one of those things that was unique to this particular
product, and I am SOL until I get a "real" video card?
Thanks in advance...
