However, if you got a newer "older" mac it would still use SCSI and you could probably boot up the drive as the main drive if you wanted. Examples would be a Performa, Quadra or another LC. If you're hard up for such a system I may have some that I could spare though it would take me a while to dig it out of the basement.

You would be booting up from the native modern drive with its modern operating system. The old LC drive would appear on the Desktop as an additional volume.
