<< Karin, Joshua, Jeremiah, and I have just joined the VAC. We are the proud
owners of a 1947 Airstream, 19' long. We pull it with a 1960 Chevrolet
Suburban Carryall. Both need major cleaning; but are fully functional.
We presently live in Central City, Colorado and are planning a move to
Wheaton, Mo. where we'll have better facilities to restore these two
vehicles.
Joshua is three and a half, and Jeremiah is two and a half. Karen and I are
late bloomers, expert skiers, and backpackers, moderate hunters and poor
fishers. We all love the outdoors. With gas prices the way they are we may
have to go back to the tent and Honda.
Have rebuilt the suspension system. Stayed as true to the original design as
possible. Replaced the light aluminum cross members with 3/8' aluminum
channel. Retained the original longitudinal tube and cross members to which
we screwed a 3/4" marine plywood tongue and grove floor. It has a propane
tank mounted just to the front of the body, on the main longitudinal frame
member just to the rear of the hitch. The interior has bunk beds on either
side in the rear, a plywood dividing panel between the sleeping area and the
front section, a closed next to the entry door with a stainless
steel/aluminum cabinet housing a propane stove/oven, sink with pump, and
icebox. The front has a table with seats on both sides. The table legs fold
up and the table can rest between the seats to make a double bed. It has
electric breaks on it's single axle two wheels. We are most curious about
the trailer's original design and layout?

Joe:
Congratulations on joining and Welcome to the VAC! I'm Fred Coldwell and
I live "down the hill" in Denver, CO. One of my trailers is a 1950 or so 18'
tube frame Airstream like yours. I'd like to visit your family and see your
trailer, frame reinforcements and interior improvements before you move out
of state. I can bring some information on interior layouts for 1948-49
Airstream trailers, which are nearly identical to yours. There were a few
different interior layouts in these slightly later years, so perhaps we can
figure out which one was most likely in your trailer before rehabbing.
Please reply by E-mail or give me a call at your convenience,

Best regards,
Fred Coldwell
