WD-40 is just refined kerosene, not a great penetrant, and lousy
lubricant. Its original purpose was as a Water Displacer for aircraft
ignition systems, the 40th try at a formulation worked.

I prefer straight kerosene for farm machinery penetrant, or Kroil for
rusty parts, though PB Blaster has worked adequately recently. I prefer
any engine oil for lubrication of mechanical parts after they are
loosened. Kerosene (ala WD-40) does lubricate a little but not very
much. My skin oil lubricates better.
