Thanks Bill,
I graciously accept all proclamations associated with my bygone days of
"dunderheadism" and never
needing any advice. Thankfully, those days were short lived (ages 16-20).
New topic - unrelated.
Here's a factoid about that Spartan Royal Mansion. The bathroom was a head of its time
(no pun
intended). There was a garbage grinder in the bottom of the toilet bowl (probably
designed as a
macerator) and there was a timer switch on the outside bulkhead of the bathroom.
As you might imagine, this provided the essential ingredient for many a memorable
experience when it
was our turn to host an evening of socializing. The guys whom I thought were too cocky
for their own
good would occasionally get a completely unexpected reminder of how vulnerable they
really were. No
harm was ever done, but the novelty was worth a chuckle (I thought so at the time).
Not all of the guys agreed. That was obvious when they came out of the bathroom
looking pale and
exhibiting a nervous laugh. Looking back now, it was an immature prank. We've never
forgotton that
trailer and still recall its many other innovative features and solid construction
details.
Someday, I'd like to restore a smaller Spartan trailer. It was built similarly to the
Airstream,
only much more substantial. We've been to the Spartan bone yard at the DonMar
Airstream dealer in
South Carolina (Exit 141 off I-95). Don Brancato's son and crew restore one or two per
year and
offer them to anyone who doesn't want to do the restoration themselves.
