Cecil,
 Not all Univolts have an SCR, most have simple diodes and a bank of
capacitors. These give the horrible hum that some folks claim is part of
the "Airstream Mystique".

You have the best solution, IMO. Although I'm a great believer in
repairing instead of replacing, this is a case of Newer is Better.
