There's another thing you can do instead of the relay, too - that's to add a new 10GA (or even better, 8GA) wire from the positive battery post directly to Term 30 of the ignition switch to supplant the stock wiring that gets there the "long way" via the voltage regulator, fusepanel, and headlight switch. It'd have to be routed carefully where it couldn't get chafed and short out - I'd add a circuit breaker, or at least a fuse (and carry a spare for it) rated at 20 to 30 amps right near the battery just as a safety measure.
