Hello,

I'm having some trouble getting my '56 bug's rear axle seal
retaining plate separated from the axle (the part that the seal
is pressed into -- what's that thing called, anyhow?). After
taking off the four bolts, I grabbed hold of the brake backing
plate and pulled -- the whole axle assembly slipped about 3/8"
towards me. The backing plate separated from both the axle and
that part perfectly fine. The axle itself rotates fine in the
seal, but it seems that the part is still affixed to the axle
somehow.

The other side of the axle had no problems and came off without
a hitch. I've rubber-malleted various places and couldn't seem to
knock anything loose. Exploded views don't give me much more
insight.

Does anybody have a clue where it might be getting bound up or
how I can separate them?

Thanks for any tips.

Regards,
Sammy
