Bill Im sorry I dont seem to fully understand,
If I get a 58-63 door then the lock mechanism would work for the
icepicks??? Am I right??
64 locking mechanism not compatible with icepicks right??
I m on the lookout for a good pair of doors. So far I have two choices.
One pair is available of unknown vintage at a VW garage here. Its 64 or
earlier as it has the smaller windows. It is missing many parts like the
outer door handle, glass, channels etc. But the person who has them says he
would complete all things before giving them. Dont believe him as pre 64
parts are real rare here now.
Any way of differentiating a 64 year door from a pre 63??
Other choice I have is interesting. Its a strange old looking bug, all
original as far as I can make out. Its papers say its a 68 but its like a 64
or earlier bug. Euro bumpers with small overriders (no towel rail), 66-67
style wheels--5 lug, small windows all round, slopping headlights, pre 62
style D horn ring with a cut in the steering wheel for it, rear decklid like
a 65-66 with pushbutton handle etc.
Its licence plate light gave me a clue.....'made in Australia'! I think
its an aussie bug........remember how in some less popular markets the bug
retained old parts and even panels to make them an interesting tutti fruiti
mix???
Well the doors on that bug are cherry and almost complete apart from a
few parts sold by the eccentric VW mech that bug is with. I plan to get my
hands on this pair as they have very little work to be done. Cant say what
style locking mechanism those would have. Any guesses??

no-if they were 63 -58 yes. they changed the locking mechanism in 64 model
year to 64-66 style. they will bolt on but will work with 59 door if use 59
mechanism in the door and weld the small hole for non ice pick handle.. so
answer is yes if put 59 mechanism in door and take out 64 mechanism. vent
windows and etc are the same.
