Hi, Ray,

Yes, the nonprofit foundation (Stiftung) that VW set up to run its museum
enterprise offers birth certificates for any car they've made.

You can order either on line or by mail. They cost 35 euros -- and of
course you pay by euro, though they'll take Visa and Interbank credit cards,
booking your account for the dollar equivalent plus a small exchange fee.
(Today it's US$50; use http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi to figure it at any
time).

By mail, write to:

Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen e.V.
Betreff: Urkunden
Dieselstrasse 35
D-38446 Wolfsburg-Hesslingen
     GERMANY

Give them your name and mailing address; the VIN of your car; and what year
and model you think it is. Either send 35 euros or a written credit-card
authorization. They're very nice about it -- just don't send them US
dollars, please.

If you want to practice your German, go on line to:

http://automuseum.volkswagen.de/urkunden.html . If you just get their home
page, find "Urkunden" (documents) and click there.
They'll ask you for your Nachname (last name), Fahrgestellnummer (VIN), and
Modell (sedan, cabrio, etc.). Check the Kreditkarte box and they'll take
the needed payment info. It'll end up costing you around 55 bucks, but they
send a very nice certificate, suitable for framing, with a bunch of the M
(option) codes, L code (paint), date of final assembly, etc. Most North
America-bound bugs were made at Emden in the later years, and type 2s at
Hannover, but your oldie probably came from Wolfsburg. But you never know.
Since the interior was generally automatically tied to the exterior paint
color, they might not cover that. I think the USA "package" had an M-code
of its own, and it always included vinyl interiors.

Enjoy,

Bert Knupp in Music City USA

Subject: [vintagvw] Birth Certificates

Hi All,

Know I have seen this many times before, but how would one go about getting

a "birth certificate" for a Bug? What I am really interested in is knowing

the type and color of interior(seats, carpet, etc) that was installed at
delivery on my 57. Thanks

Ray
