Hi, Larry,

I use a putty knife with at least a 1" wide blade.  Be sure to lift, not twist, 
or you dent up the channel.  It's best to do all this before you paint, because 
it can chip away any paint if you need to lift it much.  And if you plan to 
repaint, it's best NOT to use a silicone-based lube on your seal.  Clean out 
the channel as much as you can, since any rust or remnants will make 
rethreading your new seal harder.  You "pinch" the ends a bit to keep the seal 
from crawling.  Give the vinyl a day or so to "relax" before you crimp it in, 
though.  To tighten it back up, use a rubber mallet and a piece of board to 
knock it down evenly with no hammer marks.
