The procedure for the precise tailpipe insertion depth
(as explained in the Bentley manual) is to measure
through the tailpipe to the end of the preheat pipe -
it should be 6mm less than the overall length
of the t'pipe, which tells you that they want the
preheat pipe to protrude somewhat into the t'pipe.
While we're on the subject, note that there were three
distinct different lengths of OEM tailpipe.
The ones used with early bumpers were 276mm long.
" " " " `68-`72 " " 249mm "
" " " " `73 " " 226mm "
(it's a little-known fact that `73 rear bumper
brackets were ~3/4" longer than `68-`72, but strangely
they had shorter tailpipes)
These three were all 20mm I.D. - good luck finding
anyone who carries the 1974-only t'pipe, which is also
226mm but has a 23mm I.D.
Most parts-sellers only handle two lengths, and they
may or may not be the exact same length as the OEM
parts - so measure the actual length of what you have
when determining the correct insertion depth.
