As mentioned before on this list, I needed a different pan for my '70
Beetle because of extensive rust on the frame head. I've found a
complete rolling pan with transaxle for a good price through a VW
radio contact.

Yesterday I removed the body from the pan using a combination of
jacks, engine hoist and jack stands. The body is now supported by
2x4s and jackstands. Thanks to all who offered advice.

Something that surprised me is that the pan-to-body seal was held in
place by small nails, apparently to keep it aligned during assembly.
Was it always done this way?

Main question is about the included transaxle. Is there any way to
get a feel for its condition without knowledge of its history or
actually using it?

Thanks,

Nick Stokes
