Here's some info I got from John Deere. It's not much more than others have 
already said.

Sorry, without the model number of the tractor, I cannot verify if it
was an original John Deere horn cap or not.  I doubt it, because it does
not have the square box and wording "JOHN DEERE" around the logo which
was part of the John Deere trademark.  I do know that this 4-legged
leaping Deere logo was only made during the years 1956 - 1968.  We
currently have a 2 legged, bent legged logo.  Thank you.
