On IRS Type II and III applications and Type 181s
there are steel brackets which bolt across the back of
the engine case - a 10mm bolt on each side and an 8mm
bolt below the oil pump. It's not unusual to find a
case with the extra bosses in the casting for the bolt
holes in a car like a Beetle that doesn't use them.
Sometimes they're not drilled, sometimes they're
drilled but not tapped, sometimes they're drilled &
tapped but not HeliCoiled, and sometimes they're
completely finished - apparently whenever the supply
ran low of "Bug" cases they would raid the Type II
line. I've even seen cases that had the boss(es) on
half but not on the other, factory-"married" and
machined that way.
