      If Im not mistaken, the 65 convertible would have the same inner door 
handles as a sedan. Which would mean you could fit anything from a pre 67 bug 
right down to 1960, the year when they changed over from the earlier kind of 
handles (I may be wrong by a year or two here....please correct me). 68 and 
later handles are different but should fit. I *think* the studs sit the same 
distance apart.
 
     VW inner door handles had a metal strip behind which were held on to the 
metal hook you describe. It was a simple way to transfer the load onto the door 
itself rather than the doorpanel when you pulled onto the handle. 
 
    Let me mention that its advisable to glue on a piece of thick cloth or 
vinyl to this strip (where it contacts the hook) as it can cause a bit of 
rattling once the strip or hook have become a bit deformed due to constant 
pulling.
