Subject: Re: [vintagvw] Complete engine at idle for long period oftime
(UNCLASSIFIED)

Hi, Luis,

I would pull the valve covers and make sure the valves are moving
properly - sometimes one gets stuck open.- change the oil, and pull the
plugs and check compression, just in case. An oil pressure gauge is a
nice thing for a first start-up after a long sitting, but checking the
oil pressure switch at least will prove oil pressure is there. Check the

fan air intake and the undersides of the cylinder tins for mouse nests -

I've seen an engine fried because the owner just started a car after
letting it sit all winter, and had rodents nesting on top of the
cylinders. If you see fluffy stuff in the plug openings, it's good
insurance to pull the fan shroud and clear it out.

A squirt of light oil (Marvel Mystery or similar) in each plug hole
before spinning it for the first time will help lube the rings and
pistons. When I play with engines out of the car, I rock the motor onto
each valve cover after changing the oil, to make sure oil gets around
the rockers, valve stems, and into the cylinders.

If the engine was stored with many miles on it, adding a quart of
kerosene and letting it sit a while before draining the old oil will
help get the sludge out of the oil pan. You will most likely get a good
cloud of smoke as the cylinder oil and anything that seeped past the
valves burns off, but it should settle down in a minute or two. Let it
warm up at fast idle for a couple minutes to
