Copper coating helps prevent rust? I've seen this kind of thing before. 
A magnet is definitive. All my 36 HP motors had steel for both the gas 
line and the distributor vacuum line, compression fittings everywhere.

Overtightening compression fittings is a common error - they seal with 
moderate tightening, but get bent out of shape if cranked on. The 
failure is the pipe itself getting crushed. A properly tightened 
compression fitting does not deform the pipe noticeably.
