Look at the catch that is bolted to the body. Is it cracked in upper corner?
58 used a finger type outer handle to open the door instead of 55 and older
pad that pushes inwards on a squarish pad. The pad on handle gets worn so I
used to put some weld on and file it back to correct height. I have extra
fingers if you need to replace yours. Send photo of handles so I get correct
one for you. I think your 58 uses same setup as my 58 Double Door Panel bus.

Subject: [vintagvw] Problem with '58 Bug door lock

When the door is closed the door handle will not open the door - acts
like the door has been locked via the key. I have to reach in thru the
vent wing to unlock the door using the inside handle.

I have checked the latch housing and the latch bolt and safety catch are
free moving. If I pull the handle with the door open the latch bolt
moves as expected. If the door is closed to the outer (first) notch the
door will open via the handle. When the door is fully closed it won't
open via the handle.

This behavior started out as intermittent but is now happening all the time.

I think the problem is ware between the flipper on the handle and the
release button in the door - is there anyway to build the area up on the
flipper?

Thanks,

Bill
