I think that the transmission would fit, lengthwise, in a Bug frame, 
because the Type 3 used the same manual tranny as a Bug, with a 
different rear mount. The later Type 3 cars had mounting similar to 
later buses - the engine was mounted at the rear and the trans at the 
front. I seem to remember that the IRS Type 3 cars also had mounts at 
the top of the bell housing.

So, I would expect the trans would "fit", but you would have to 
fabricate mounts for the rear of the frame horns, and possibly the frame 
horns would need to be modified to clear the oil pan on the 
transmission. The distance from the nose of the tranny to the axes would 
still be the same as a Bug. The front mount might well be different, too.

I never pulled the trans out of an automatic Type 3 - does the shift 
cable run down the tunnel to the front of the trans, or to a lever on 
the side like most automatics? The way the valve body in most automatics 
is arranged, I would expect the latter.

An automatic from a late bay window bus might also have the same nose to 
axle dimension...
