Volks,

The aftermarket trunk liners I've found all seem to be the same dull gray
color, with a smooth texture. Since the original for my 1970 beetle was
black and with a slight wafflegrain pattern, it just didn't look right.

After some experimentation, I found that a small can of semi-gloss black
latex paint, applied with a deep-fuzz roller to a Bugpack liner, made a
remarkably good replica of the original. I used Rust-O-Leum brand
semi-gloss latex paint (it's one of their newer products and not available
everywhere, but my Home Depot stocks it) but I suppose any will do. The
textured finish left by the stippling of the thick roller is not perfect
squares, but it takes a very close look to see a difference. The vinyl
coating it leaves is quite tough, flexible, and resistant to scuffing. And
if it should get scratched up, you have the touchup paint waiting.
