Angie and all the Volks,
Anybody who is into collecting/accumulating/rescuing (you pick) old bugs for
purposes of profit or wealth accumulation is into the wrong hobby! When I
began my first fix-up (it turned into a full restoration), an old-timer on
this list reminded me: Any restoration ends up taking three times as long
and costing four times as much as you ever expected. An old car is always
going to be a constant drain on your net worth, even though it might be a
constant enhancement of your net enjoyment and pleasure. There's a cost and
a benefit to be evaluated.
So Angie, to cut your losses by just selling off your wounded Sun Bug is
undoubtedly a sane, rational choice. It might also be necessary if you're
really unable to manage both your own health and your Sun Bug's. Sadly, it
happens. But it's an emotional decision almost akin to finding a new home
for a beloved pet. All you can do is try to find it an appreciative home --
not somebody who wants to chop it into a Baja or worse. (My opinion.)
If you decide to repair it: Your guy at Sunray Bugs will almost certainly
be able to get you a correct paint match -- they're pros -- and there are
good paint shops in most major cities who can work miracles on the
finishing. Ask around among local connoisseurs. So-called "collision
shops" are rarely a good choice. If your fender-bender is covered by your
insurance, you still get to choose the shop! If you have a reputable
insurer that's familiar with "special interest" vehicles (Hagerty is
well-known, and there are several others), they'll understand.
So sorry about your '74. They're worth saving (my opinion).

Hi Bert,
Bit of bad news.....had a fender bender in my 1974 Sun Bug. Yes, I am sick
over it. There are so many things you need to be picky about when repairing
a classic. I called Corey at Sunray Bugs in Dade City, FL. He thinks he
has all the parts, just worried about the paint match.
I bought the car for $10,000 4 years ago at the Dade City Bug Fest. It is a
charm. Now I am wondering if I should cut my losses and sell as is. Also,
my health is not great. Been in and out of the hospital 4 times in the last
2 months. I need advice.
Sincerely,
Angie
