Volks,

Several of you have commented on the picture on FaceBook of me and my
family. The picture was snapped in 1978, so it's not entirely current. For
instance, the two tallest little girls are now both parents of college kids.
Tempus fugit!

Erin Lassley said he didn't know I'd been a bus guy. Oh, yeah - for a big
family, that 1974 Big Orange was a lifesaver. The kids had space, mom and
dad had quiet, and the gas bill didn't impoverish us. Had it from 1974 till
1984. Lots of "comfort customization," like window curtains, carpets, etc.,
made traveling cross-country nice. Of course, crossing the Rockies and the
Grand Tetons was an interesting challenge. Long days driving uphill with
six aboard, plus luggage, meant that even 18-wheelers went flying past us.
Still, if only VW could again produce a simple, basic, inexpensive
multipurpose box, they'd sell like Pfannenkuchen!

Merry Christmas from Music City USA!
