This has got to be one of the most bizarre progression of posts I've ever read on the vintagvw listserv. I'm sorry that we couldn't help you in time to prevent a fire, however for future reference if you are driving any vehicle that exhibits symptoms of accelerating on its own, the best course of action was, has, and always will be to shut the darn thing off and don't drive it until you or a prefessional can fix the problem.

I would say that the shop that did the work is liable because obviously something wasn't reassembled correctly and I'm sincerely sorry for your loss.
