OK, just did a Google search for “How can I make a video call with my Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses” and I found this:

You can share your view from Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses while on a Messenger or WhatsApp call.

You can switch between your glasses camera view and phone camera view by double-pressing the capture button on your glasses.

While you’re sharing video from your glasses camera, you can lock your phone to go hands-free while continuing to share the view from your glasses.

So, can somebody who has done this confirm that asking Meta to make a Whatsapp or Messenger call wil use the phone’s camera and that you then have to double tap the camera button to share the view from your glasses?

I also don’t see Facetime mentioned, will this work with a Facetime call?

Subject: First impressions of my Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses and a question regarding video calls

Hi,

As I said in another reply I have purchased a pair of the Wayfarer smart glasses today. I downloaded the Meta View app and setup was super easy and straight forward and for the most part fully accessible. One area where I found I had to enable screen recognition was in the area in Settings where you can enable your prefered music service, e.g. Amazon, Apple or Spotify and also there is another place where you can select what a tap and hold on the touch panel does, e.g. it can bring up the Meta AI assistant without having to sayv Hey Meta which you may not always want to do in some situations. There are some other options a tap and hold can perform, but I forgot.

Then there is also a triple tap of some sort, have to check again, but again you can assign a different action to it. Anyways, at least for me these options were just read as some graphic thing, but with screen recognition I could get the information. Oh yes, and also there is a place where you can set the time when video recording automatically stops. It seems to me that if you press and hold the physical button on the frame to start video recording or say “Hey Meta, record video” that it is not possible to do so indefinitely, you can select for video to stop recording after 15 or 30 seconds or after 1 or 3 minutes. Initially I selected 3 minutes and I received a warning that it would deplete the battery a lot faster than the other settings so for now I went with 1 minute.

OK, now I start by saying I am quite impressed with the ease of the setup process and what you can do with the glasses. However, below are 3 initial observations and then a question: 1. Once I paired the glasses, Voiceover of course switched to the glasses and I am very happy how well you can hear and how good in a way it sounds. Of course your ears are uncovered as the sound comes from the arms and it's almost like bone conduction, but I find they actually sound better than my Aftershokz.

2. The second thing I noticed almost immediately is that Voiceover is fairly laggy and I already know I certainly won't use the glasses if I have to type a bit more text like when writing or replying to a text message or email etc. When I added my Wi-Fi network at work and had to type my password it's pretty slow going and I must say Apple really has that issue licked with their Airpods.

I used to say that any Bluetooth headset or speaker has a lag, but after buying a set of Airpods 4 with ANC along with my iPhone 16 Pro in early October, I must say I can't really notice a lag. Using Airpods and of course also wired EarPods it's extremely responsive and it spoils it for most other Bluetooth headsets and speakers.

3. Asking "Hey Meta, what do you see". I was walking home tonight wearing the glasses and using them to listen to an Audible book and I thought I just try to ask that question. I expected the glasses to take a picture and for Meta AI to then give me some sort of description. Instead I got the reply "Battery is too low, charge glasses" or something alog those lines. I then asked "Hey Meta, what is the battery level" and was told it was 72%. One should expect that with 72% it would work and my only conclusion was that the smart glasses do not like the Northern British /Columbia winter. When I was walking home it was around -15 Celsius which is near 0 Farenheit and I guess the battery and all that was maybe just too cold.

Now my question for those who have had their smart glasses for a while and have successfully done a Facetime video call. How do you do it? I read how to do it and I have successfully connected my phone, enabled everything in terms of contact sync and whatever else there was in Settings > Bluetooth > My Meta smart glasses. Let's assume I want to make a Facetime video call to John Smith, it is my understanding I should be able to say "Hey Meta, call John Smith on Facetime". I have tried to call my wife a couple of times and each time it says "

Calling Jackie using Phone" but all I ever get is a regular phone call where my expensive smart glasses are nothing more than a Bluetooth headset.

I then tried "Hey Meta, make a video call to Jackie" and it wanted to use Facebook Messenger. I also connected Messenger and again it made the call and my wife picked up, but while it said on my phone that the camera was on, she said she only had a black screen, basically an audio call. I must be missing something here and this also was while I was still in my office so definitely not an issue because it was too cold.

I'll go ahead and maybe try a Be My Eyes call because I did also set that up in Settings > Accessibility in the Meta View app so it should work, but I haven't tried it yet. Look forward to any feedback others may have especially regarding Facetime calls.

Best regards,

Sieghard
