There does not seem to be a way to delete a voice mail without it playing first.
When a new voice mail is tapped, it plays. Once that happens, then the delete button can be pressed. With headphones in, the delete button can be pressed as soon as the voice mail begins, and it will delete immediately. Hope this helps!
