Hi Debbie, While you can use the iPhone charger for your iPad, you'll find that your iPad will charge very slowly. The iPad draws 10 watts of power while the iPhone or iPod Touch will draw 5 watts. That means that the iPad charger can be used to charge an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or even a Nano at its maximum charging rate. On the other hand, while the iPhone charger can charge an iPad, you'll find that it will take much longer to reach a full charge. Here's a link to the Apple Knowledge Base article about "iPhone and iPod: Using the iPad 10W USB Power Adapter": http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4327 It states: "The iPad USB Power Adapter is a 10W charger. While designed for use with the iPad, you can use the iPad 10W USB Power Adapter to charge all iPhone and iPod models by connecting them using a Dock Connector to USB cable."
If I were traveling and only wanted to take one charger to use with both my iPhone and my iPad, I would take the charger for my iPad. This is also the general rule for power adapters for the Apple computers: you can use a power adapter that is rated to supply more power than your computer requires without problems, but not the other way around. So you can use the power bricks for the MacBook Pro laptops in place of the smaller power bricks of the MacBook Air models, but not vice versa if you need a reliable power source. HTH.
