Debbie, it's a hard reset, where as if you hit the power button five or six times, that's considered a soft reset. A hard reset won't damage any of your files, I've used it sometimes when I just cannot get Siri to work. It essentially shuts down and restarts your iPhone, without actually turning it off and having to hit the power button to turn it back on.
