There isn't anything preventing a clean connection either in the headphone port on the phone or the jack on the cable? I once had to have an iPod Touch replaced because one of the connection points in the port somehow sank, such that the jack could no longer make contact. All I can suggest is that it might be a similar sort of issue, either with the cable or the port.
