Hi Jess,

When people get started with Prizmo and other OCR apps, a common problem is not
having sufficient light for your images. I use the light detector app to check
this. Also, it's a good idea to start with something simple. For example, if
you have a letter that you printed out, you can use that to train with. You
should expect an initial steep learning period because you're going to have to
be precise in orienting your iPhone camera by lining it up according to the
edges of the page, and also holding it flat. You also need to make sure that
the page you are trying to OCR lies flat. However, one of the good things
about Prizmo is that you usually get enough information to correct your method,
and it also works pretty fast.

What kind of errors are you encountering? If you get some text, but not with
several tildes interspersed, that's probably a case where the page is not flat.
If there is insufficient light, you'll probably get what appears to be random
characters. That can also happen if you hold the camera skewed with the edges
of the paper.

If you become practiced with lining up the camera with the edges of the page,
you'll find that you can OCR documents that are upside down or rotated by 90
degrees to the right or left with equal facility. It does take a lot of
practice, but then at some point it just works.

David Chittenden has had a lot of good tips in the past, and maybe he can make
some suggestions. It would help to know what you're getting back from the
program. Also, if you're using an iPhone 3GS the camera may not be good enough
to give you reliable results. An iPod Touch camera or iPad 2 camera is
definitely not good enough.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
