Hi Grant I have not had any problems with Canadian currency accept for our new fifty dollar bills.
I start Looktell running, lay the phone flat on the bill and slowly raise it up. Sometimes I flip the bill to the other side. I would estimate that the distance is probably between 6 to 8 inches.
