I think it is a series of reference points on the screen, such as
common buttons, key placements for the virtual keyboard, and other
things. The trouble with the tactile screens is that if you use an app
that has things in different places, or even orients your phone/pod in
landscape view, the tactile screen does you very little good. I have
never used a tactile screen myself, so may not know what I'm talking
about. I used the touch screen for the first 6 months of having my
iPhone with no issues. When the tactile screens started coming out for
the iPhone last year, I figured that if I had used the phone with no
issues for 6 months, then why get a tactile screen. I suppose it is a
personal choice though. Another possible issue to consider is that the
screen orientations may not be clear. This is an issue if you ever
have someone look at your screen. If the tactile screen is not clear,
then your phone or devices screen cannot be visible to a sighted
person. If the tactile screens are clear, then this would not be a
problem. Those that have tactile screens say they can quickly move
around their screens. I can quickly move around my screen, but that's
mainly because I know where common items are supposed to be in the
apps I regularly use. I can also move quickly around the screen with
my bluetooth wireless keyboard, so again I suppose its a matter of
personal preference.
